March Gardening Tips

TLC’s March Checklist & Pruning Guide

  1. Early in the month, you still have time to plant cool-season vegetable crops. Plants and seeds are available now:
    Potato | onion | asparagus | beet | broccoli | cabbage | carrot | cauliflower | kohlrabi | lettuce | onion | peas | potato | radish | rhubarb | spinach | swiss chard | turnip
  2. This is a great time to plant shade, fruit and nut trees, as well as grapes and other berries.
  3. Plant shrubs, perennials and herbs now, but check with your trusty TLC representative for a few exceptions.
  4. Fertilize established trees and shrubs with TLC Tree, Shrub and Landscape Food.
  5. Apply Bio Advanced Tree & Shrub – Protect & Feed for insect control and fertilizer. This prevents borers, bagworms, webworms, scale and other insects for 12 months.
  6. Be sure to adequately water newly planted trees and shrubs – this often makes the difference between success and replacement.
  7. Prepare flower and vegetable beds with Back To Earth Soil Conditioner.
  8. Plant cool-season annual flowers, such as lobularia, snapdragons and petunias.
  9. Purchase caladium bulbs, but don’t plant until May.
  10. Prune shrubs as needed before new growth appears, but wait to prune spring flowering shrubs until after they bloom.
  11. Prune roses just before growth starts and begin a regular disease spray program as the foliage appears. Use Bio Advanced All-in-1 Rose & Flower Care.
  12. Wait to prune spring flowering shrubs until after they bloom. This includes azaleas, forsythia, lilacs and viburnum.
  13. Divide and replant summer and fall blooming perennials (mums and asters).
  14. Remove excessive thatch from Bermuda grass lawns before applying a pre-emergent weed control.
  15. If not done in February, apply Sure Green Crab Grass Annual Bluegrass Preventer Plus Lawn Food for spring weed control in Bermuda or fescue lawns this fall. It prevents weeds by killing seeds, so do not apply if you are seeding any grass this Spring.
  16. Seed new areas or overseed existing areas of shady lawn grasses with TLC Premium Sun & Shade Mixture, Crossfire 4 Tall Fescue Seed, or Rebel Shady Lawn Mix. Then apply Fertilome New Lawn Starter Fertilizer.
  17. Fertilize existing shady lawn grasses with TLC Premium Lawn Food.
  18. Spray visible broadleaf weeds with Gordon’s Speed Zone.
  19. Treat for lawn grubs with Bio Advanced Season Long Grub Control.
  20. Cut back foliage on ornamental grasses and liriope (monkey grass).
  21. Keep a close eye on all plants and bring samples of insects or damage to TLC Garden Centers for diagnosis.
