Succulent Survival
Cacti & succulents come from various regions of the world. Both encompass many different varieties of plants. Therefore, most of the time, they aren’t sorted or named when you see them in store. Fortunately, though, the care for these cacti and succulents are similar.
Light
Many cacti & succulents can sustain and grow with at least medium light. South facing windows work best in Oklahoma. Depending on the plant variety, intensity of the sun or time of year, west facing windows can work as well. North and east facing windows don’t tend to give enough light, but can work in certain situations.
Water
Cacti & succulents don’t require much water to survive. Just like house plants, their watering cycle is dependent on the environment. Check the soil before watering by sticking your finger into the dirt to feel the moisture level or using a Rapitest Soil Moisture Meter.
Because the soil used is looser (i.e. Miracle Gro Cactus Palm & Citrus Potting Mix, sand and gravel), saturate the soil when watering and check it about once a week until you can establish a normal schedule for your plants. If your plants start to brown or droop, bring a piece to TLC and we’ll diagnose the issue.
Fertilizing your cactus or succulent is simple. Use Bonide Liquid Cactus Food (2-7-7) in the water you use. Follow the package directions for amount and frequency.
Insects
The best way to prevent insects is to treat your cacti and succulents with Bonide Systemic House Plant Insecticide every 6 weeks. Monitor your plants at every watering for issues. As soon as you see a problem, bring in a sample, and we will help you find a solution.
