TLC Guide to Shade Annuals

As a guide, partial shade refers to those areas that are shaded for 4-6 hours per day. Morning sun or east facing locations are typical or dappled light obstructed by trees. Afternoon sun is not considered within the partial shade parameters because of the intensity of afternoon sun, these areas can become quite hot and require more sun loving annuals. Full shade areas receive no direct sun only indirect light. North sides of structures or under fully-leafed trees are examples.

Begonia Big

Bigger and better than standard wax begonias. Creates a lush, beautiful display in part shade beds, hanging baskets or containers. Available in both Bronze Leaf and Green Leaf, however the Green Leaf is best for shade. Bred for unsurpassed garden performance. Height & width 12 to 18”.

Dragon Wing Begonia

Angel wing-like, shiny green leaves and large drooping scarlet flowers. Typically forms dense mounds to 15-18” tall and as wide. It is superb for shaded or morning sun areas.

Wax Begonia

Produces green foliage and bright pink, red or white blossoms with touches of yellow in the center of bloom. It is a compact plant that blooms all summer long and is very uniform in its habit. Height 6 to 8”. Width 10 to 12” wide. (Bronze leaf begonias do not hold their foliage color in the shade.

Caladium

Leaves can be shaped like hearts, arrows, or lances in color combinations of red, pink, rose, white, chartreuse, and green. The brilliant foliage of this classic plant is often translucent, which makes them light up your shaded areas. Height & width 12 to 24”.

Coleus, Kong

HUGE foliage, Unique color combinations on foliage, adds interest to shade garden beds and containers Height 18-20”. Spread 15-18”.

Dazzler Impatiens

The compact, extremely uniform growth habit and vivid blooms makes this a fantastic choice for landscape, baskets and containers! The blooms are approximately 1.5” wide that bloom right up until the frost. These Impatiens are desired most for their wide selection of bright, ever-blooming colors.Height 9 to 12”. Width 13 to 15”.

New Guinea Impatiens

Covers itself with rich brilliant blooms atop beautiful, thick green foliage for an attractive contrast of color. The brilliant blooms make this a fantastic choice for baskets and containers! The blooms are approximately 2-3” wide. Height 18 to 36”. Width 12-36” wide.

Lobelia

Deep green foliage with dainty, bright blue blooms that blend beautifully in mixed containers and dramatically drape over edges. The mounding, semi-trailing growth habit and colorful blooms makes this a fantastic choice for landscape, baskets and containers! Its blooms are just above the foliage and bloom all through early Spring and Summer. Height 6 to 10”. Width 10-16” wide.

Torenia

Small, fragrant leaves that will remain low and dense to the ground. Torenia is a vining plant and looks great in baskets and containers where it can cascade over the edges! Height 6to 12”. Spread 10 to 12”.
