Cool season grasses, such as fescue and ryegrass, grow best in moderate shade or part sun. These are the areas where warm season grasses, such as Bermuda, grow poorly. One problem with cool season grasses is they do not make runners and reproduce themselves as does Bermuda. They cannot fill in the spots vacated by a dead clump of grass. Cool season grasses must therefore be overseeded each spring and fall to provide a thick turf.
TLC Premium Sun & Shade Mixture is a blend, combining 3 different fescue seeds with perennial ryegrass and Kentucky Bluegrass seed. The mix allows the fescue and ryegrass to adapt to the area it is planted, while the bluegrass has some spreading ability to fill in areas between the other grasses.
TLC Mixture produces a fine, dark green leaf and a moderately low growing habit. It is more tolerant than most seeds of close mowing and bounces back from traffic and heavy use. It develops an extensive root structure that penetrates even poor soils in search of moisture, providing a higher quality turf in hot, drier climates.
TLC Premium Sun & Shade Mixture should be seeded at the rate of 1 pound of seed per 100 square feet of new lawn area. Break up the soil about 2 to 3 inches deep with a rake or rototiller, level the soil, broadcast the seed on top of the soil. At the time of seeding apply Fertilome New Lawn Starter Fertilizer. Water lightly every other day for about 14 days and the new grass will come up. A light layer of Sphagnum Peat Moss broadcast over the seed will help with watering and speed up germination.
